Boeing Pride 2006

When Lady Jane DJ was first contacted to perform at Boeing Pride, Her first reaction was, "Boeing has a Pride?" Boeing does have a Pride, for Boeing employees, their friends and family. Pride at Boeing was very informative on passed accoplishments by Gay and Lesbian people in American History. Many people attended to watch the first Straight, Gay, young men and ladies Chorus, enjoy food and beverages, listen to public speakers such as Ed Murrey, and listen to Lady Jane DJ's music selections. Lady Jane DJ had so much fun at Boeing Pride 2006!

Excerpt: Byron Hurt: On Manhood in Hip Hop

It took Bryon Hurt six years to make the kind of movie he wanted to make about hip hop. And with his new documentary, Beyond Beats and Rhymes: A Hip-Hop Head Weighs in on Manhood in Hip-Hop Culture, that dream has finally been realized.

The story of how Beyond Beats came to be stretches back even further, though, back to Hurt’s college years. “I grew up with hip hop,” says Hurt, 36. He partied with hip hop, he chilled out with hip hop – when he was quarterback of the Northeastern University football team in the early nineties, it was hip hop that got him pumped before games. It was, and is, a huge part of his life: “I still love hip hop,” he says.

Hurt’s relationship to some of hip hop’s lyrical content shifted soon after college, when he was hired to educate high school and college athletes about gender issues. “I didn’t know anything about ‘gender awareness’ when they hired me,” he says. “It made me nervous. I was worried my friends would think I was soft for what I was doing.” The training he received on the job, though, changed his life. “I realized for the first time that sexism and violence against women were real issues. And I felt like I could make a difference.”

Then, while watching Rap City one day back in 2000, Hurt suddenly found himself noticing that “all the videos looked very … formulaic.” Thugged-out rappers, scantily-clad women, cash, and cars – it all seemed to be playing on repeat, and it all seemed to present the same message: these are the things you need in order to be a “man.”

Hip-hop pops a bubbly

For his 28th-birthday soiree, Jason "Liva" Rodriguez wanted guests to leave with lasting memories of an upscale affair. So, of course, the champagne of choice had to be Cristal - 10 bottles of the bubbly at more than $300 each.

"It draws attention because everyone knows how much it costs," Rodriguez said. "If it's Cristal, then you're really doing it big."

But now, Rodriguez, owner of Dat's What's Up urban wear store in Bear, Del., is siding with rap impresario Jay-Z and swearing off Cristal, saying, "If they don't want us drinking it, why should we spend our money buying it?"

This month, Jay-Z, chief executive officer of Def Jam Records and owner of the 40/40 clubs in Atlantic City, N.J., and Manhattan, New York, announced that he would no longer serve Cristal in his nightclubs because he believed remarks made by an executive of the champagne company were "racist." Cristal sells for $400 to $600 a bottle at nightclubs.

The flap over Cristal - once made exclusively for Russian czars in the late 1800s but anointed a hip-hop trendsetter in lyrics and music videos - could cost Cristal millions of dollars."

Interview with Field Mob

Excerpt:"Field Mob: Coming Correct

By Kathy Iandoli

The gods over at Google must invest in irony, because upon searching for the Georgian group Field Mob, the description lists them as artists from New York. Surely anyone with even an earlobe to the street knows of the current situation regarding the Albany, Georgia natives and their take on the New York Hip-Hop scene. Field Mob was reportedly misrepresented mimicking New York rappers in both gesture and slang on tape. In the midst of misquoting, edited video clips, and proverbial middle fingers to the media, Field Mob has without a doubt expressed an undeniable truth that the South is a major player in Hip-Hop today.

Formerly known as Kalage and Boondox Blax, the duo resurrected as Shawn Jay and Smoke, inking a deal with Ludacris’ DTP by-way-of Geffen. Hailed as artists on the rise with two albums under their belt, Field Mob’s goal this time around with Light Poles and Pine Trees is to inform the world that the South is on fire; and they’re holding the matches. The group surfaced last fall to dismiss any assumptions that their place in the music is strictly for comedy. Although their sound has clearly evolved, the group has definitely maintained their sense of humor mixed with catchy wordplay. While their single “So What” featuring Ciara currently spins on both radio and video, Field Mob is gearing for their third release.

Speaking with Shawn Jay and Smoke, the duo lightheartedly explains their take on regional Hip-Hop, their issues with AllHipHop.com [yes, us], and their unfortunate negative portrayal as media minstrels.

AllHipHop.com: Smoke, why’d you switch names to Chevy-P?

Smoke: Maturity, grew older. I felt like it.

AllHipHop.com: How do you feel you’ve changed in addition to the names?

Shawn J: We’ve both got beautiful daughters. The maturity level changed. The priority list has been rearranged. We’re finally gettin’ to the right position that we should be [in]. Everything’s different now. We understand how to make music. We understand how to politic, which is the s**t that got us f**ked out the game last time. We understand all that… it’s…we know! We know what’s up now."
